The Charlestown Chiefs are a financially-struggling hockey team headed by player-coach Reggie Dunlop (Paul Newman). When informed that the team is going to be folded or sold at the end of the season, Dunlop decides to change the style of his team's play from one of regular hockey to outright guerrilla warfare on the ice. To do so, he begins to play the Hanson Brothers (Dave Hanson, Steve Carlson, Jeff Carlson); three players whose near homicidal style on the ice begins to inspire the crowds who are desperate to have something to cheer. Slowly winning, the Chiefs wind up in the championship game against Syracuse who has re-tooled themselves by adding the most despicable goons in hockey to the team in order to beat the rough-playing Chiefs. Vowing to play a clean game, the Chiefs square off in their last ever game in the quest for a championship to give one last hurrah to the town about to lose them.
