Based on a harrowing Stephen King short story, "The Langoliers" starts with a seemingly ordinary red-eye flight that suddenly becomes terrifying when all passengers present who were not asleep mysteriously disappear. Those left number less than a dozen. Among those awake are a young blind girl, Dinah (Kate Maberly), Nick, an Englishman with a past yet to be revealed (Mark Lindsay Chapman), and a stressed investment banker, Craig (Bronson Pinchot). There is also a kindly school teacher, Laurel (Patricia Wettig) who becomes a surrogate mother to Dinah. After Brian (David Morse), the only sleeping pilot (because he was a passenger) surmounts the obstacle of landing the plane at a small Maine airport, the characters explore their empty surroundings. Beer and other carbonated drinks are flat, and the air has a stale taste to it. As it turns out, they have somehow landed in the past- a past that will soon be devoured by Shiva-like destroyer entities called The Langoliers. How they got there, what the Langoliers are, and how the group will get out is part of the intriguing central focus of this exciting film.
