The Pelham, a New York City subway train, becomes the focal point a terrorist attack. Four gunmen, Blue(Robert Shaw), Green (Martin Balsam), Grey (Hector Elizondo), Brown (Earl Hindman), hijack a New York City subway train and hold its passengers and conductor hostage. Halfway between underground stations, they demand 1 million dollars to be delivered in 1 hour or they will begin executing hostages. A veteran NY transit officer, Lt. Zachary Garber (Walter Matthau) attempts to track down the identities of the gunmen, lead negotiations, and prevent any killing. Garber has to contend with both the growing demands of the four armed men but also with City Hall red tape.
